UNIDO HOSTS WORKSHOP FOR GHANA FRUIT AND VEG STAKEHOLDERS

A one day workshop will be held in Accra on the 13th of June by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) to host stakeholders in the fruit and vegetable sector. The workshop is to help identify conformity assessment gaps in areas which require support under horticulture.

Experts from Ghana and Abroad will be speaking at the event aimed at helping Ghana’s fruit and vegetable sector to conform to international standards to make produce in Ghana attractive and accepted in local and international markets.

Linda Agyemang, Project Communication Assistant for UNIDO, said the workshop will be on the theme “Assessing Innovation Opportunities in Ghana’s Fruit and Vegetable Value Chains”. The event is expected to bring together various actors in the fruit and vegetable sector.

The first phase of the programme which ended in December 2011, placed emphasis on the technical assistance provided to support conformity assessment.  It is announced that the second phase of the programme is underway to identify areas of intervention in a number of agricultural value chains related to commodities including fruit and vegetables, fish, wood and cocoa.

It was stated that ‘the intervention will be geared to improve export quality, extend value addition and assure compliance with market requirements’.
