Chale Wote 2013 – Accra’s Biggest Street Art Festival set to Rock the City!

Accra’s biggest street art festival – Chale Wote is set to take place on the 7th to 8th of September 2013, from 10am – 9pm at its accustomed venue: James Town (Accra).

The theme for Chale Wote 2013 is ‘Reimagining African Folklore by Creating Exciting and Futuristic Versions’.

Organiser Mantse describes it as a festival “… bringing together artists and the public to imagine their future as well as create new visions of folklore. For the third time running, we are going to witness artists dragging the future into the present and form new realities of existence within a space like Accra.”

Over the course of the two days, James Town will be transformed into an alternative art and music lover’s paradise.  The public will be introduced to an array of alternative entertainment including : street paintings, graffiti murals, interactive art installations, live street performances, extreme sports, experimental community theatre, independent African film screenings, recyclable design workshops and more.

This free event has been known to draw in a variety of crowds and tourists and this year is set to follow suit.

A number of artists have been confirmed for Chale Wote 2013. They include Ghana-based artists like Attukwei Clottey, Ibrahim Mahama, Bernard Akoi-Jackson, Nana Ofori-Atta Ayim and many more. German graffiti artist, David Bethmann will also be working with the Nima Muhinmanchi Art to transform the old Kingsway building. Artists from the United States, France and South Africa will also present compelling works of art.

The Chale Wote Street Art Festival is produced by ACCRA [dot] ALT with the premise of cultivating ‘a wider audience for the arts, break creative boundaries and use art as a viable form to rejuvenate public spaces’.
