Dum_Doodles

Kwam Korsa-Acquah is the artistic mastermind behind Dum-Doodles, which boasts an extensive collection of colourful animation and a vibrant colour palette.

The name Dum-Doodles was inspired during childhood when Kwam’s doodles of teachers during class was often referred to as ‘dumb’. The brand has since gone to be a successful venture, producing work commissioned by the likes of Warner Bros Records, Chris brown and many more.

Kwam attributes his success to willingly following his passion for telling stories through art. This dedicated and inspirational young man aspires to be a catalyst for change within the art and animation industry in Africa. Chosen from a pool of talented applicants, Kwam Acquah is one of the eight nominees for the GUBA Artist Extraordinaire Award.

In his own words, the brainchild behind the Dum-Doodles brand explains what winning will mean to him…

Congratulations on your nomination for the Artist Extraordinaire Award. How do you feel about your nomination?

This nomination is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and has come at an incredible time in my life. It is a great honour and privilege to be an Urban Cartoonist nominated amongst such great and talented artistes in their respected fields. I am truly grateful to GUBA and to all who chose me for this award.

Tell us why you deserve the Artist Extraordinaire Award

Dum-Doodles Animations is a crazy cohesive universe. I believe that with the right exposure, platforms and collaborations, this animated world can be influential to the entertainment industry in Ghana and Africa as a whole. This Cartoon movement goes beyond me and I have more in store for the future.

What inspired you to pursue art?

I have a profound interest in stories, some will say that I am a ‘nerd’ for stories. I am always interested in hearing the stories of the people that I come across and I draw inspiration from their experiences.

One of my earliest inspirations came from my father. As a toddler I was surrounded by his doodles and animations on TV and years later, having visually consumed the worlds of Walter Disney, Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network, it has resulted in the original Dum-Doodle artwork I produce today!  Art to me is the ability to bring stories to life and this has been my inspiration all along.

What do you think about the GUBA Awards?

I think the impact the GUBA Awards is having on Ghanaians across many different fields is encouraging. GUBA shines the biggest possible light on Ghanaians doing incredible things that would otherwise go unnoticed. To be in their fifth year and to be respected governmentally and socially worldwide, makes anyone associated with the GUBA Awards feel inspired and honoured.
